Don't Believe The Hype!
Don't be put off by stereotypes of school councils. You don't have to be affluent, middle class or highly educated. The only real requirements are a concern for other peoples' children as well as your own (not as common as you might think), and some spare time (even less common).
Tell your child's teacher if you want to get involved with the Parent Council and you'll be recruited before you finish the sentence.

We meet ON the first Tuesday of every month in the staff room. Meetings are informal and any parents/ guardians will receive a warm welcome if they wish to come along. Information about the meetings should be posted on notice boards inside the nursery, outside the pupil entrance in the school playground and outside the janitor's office within the school.
Many people are wary of offering to help with fundraising events through fear that they will be locked into unwanted duties. Tell us how much time you're prepared to give up, and about what you enjoy and what you detest doing. For example, perhaps you love cooking, but hate phone calls and organisation. So bake the cakes and leave the admin to those who like it (plenty do). This organisation welcomes all contributions, from expert advice on recycling schemes to making tea and we always try to play to the individual's strengths rather than lumbering them with an unwanted task.

We always need Committee members and new faces are most welcome. However if you can?t attend meetings you can help out in other ways. We usually issue notification of an upcoming event and make a request volunteers. Please consider helping, even if you can only manage a couple of hours!

We are lucky to be backed up by a host of unseen (and often unsung) parent volunteers who support and help out at the different events and we could not do it without them!

The following are just some examples of items provided by the Fund Raising Initiatives in the past:
Public announcement system, hall curtains, football & netball strips,
playground benches, library books, subsidies for school trips,
sports equipment, digital camera, computer smart screen.
